What EcoFlow put on sale on 21 August 2026
EcoFlow, the Shenzhen portable-power brand that reached UK homes through Delta Pro power stations and PowerStream microinverters, opened UK pre-orders for the Stream Series home battery on 21 August 2026. Three units make up the range, but the one the launch is built around is the Stream 5000. The headline numbers are:
The early-bird price is £1,599 (EcoFlow launch release, 21 August 2026). EcoFlow has not confirmed the post-launch RRP or a fixed ship date, so check the EcoFlow UK store for the current price and dispatch estimate before you plan around it.
Why the timing is deliberate, and why it still needs an electrician
On 27 August 2026 plug-in solar up to 800W AC became legal to use in Great Britain (SI 2026/848), and EcoFlow opened Stream 5000 pre-orders six days before that.
What the new rules do not cover is plug-in batteries: SI 2026/848 covers solar generators up to 800W AC. EcoFlow says the STREAM is professionally installed by a certified electrician (EcoFlow launch release). The Stream 5000 is a compact 5kWh home battery, not a plug-in accessory.
The £1,599 does not include installation. Get an installer quote covering the electrician hardwire, the G98 notification and any consumer-unit changes to see the fitted price, before any solar hardware.
What 5 kWh actually delivers on a smart tariff
For a household with no solar, the Stream 5000 earns its keep the same way any UK home battery does: overnight Octopus Go import at 9.4p versus discharge against a 35.3p to 39.3p day rate, depending on region (Octopus Go GO-FIX-12M-26-10-14, checked 15 October 2026; see how we worked it out). We assume 90% round-trip efficiency.

Those numbers assume the household actually uses the discharged kWh in the peak window. If it does not, the surplus sits unused or, where you have an export tariff such as Outgoing Octopus, is exported at that tariff's rate. Two things follow. First, a 5 kWh battery suits a home whose use in that window is around 5 kWh or less. Second, a home that uses more than that will empty the battery and still buy the rest from the grid at the higher rate, so check your own usage on your bill or smart meter data.
How the fitted price compares
Per usable kWh installed is the number that matters. The Stream 5000, on the assumptions above, is not the outright cheapest UK option, but it is competitive:

Read this cautiously. The Stream 5000's £/kWh installed depends on the install quote. Habo Energy's own offer is this 5 kWh EcoFlow STREAM from £2,499 fully installed: that is the fitted price, not a kit price. If you can fit and use 10 to 15 kWh of storage, the pounds per year of savings scale close to linearly with capacity, so a bigger battery pays back its extra pounds inside the same window.
Who the Stream 5000 genuinely suits
Good fit. Single-occupant flats, small terraced houses with sub-3,000 kWh annual use, and leaseholders with limited wall space and no EV. Also anyone starting from plug-in solar in September or October 2026 who wants a battery that will accept a proper 4 kWp roof array later without a full inverter swap. The 3 kW AC output covers a kettle plus a toaster plus normal evening base load, but not simultaneous kettle plus induction hob plus EV charger.
Poor fit. Three-bed family homes with heat pumps, an EV, or both. A 5 kWh battery will empty before the peak-rate window ends and the household will still pay full price for the last hours. Watch out for. The full installed cost, not the shelf price. The £1,599 headline does not include the electrician, the G98 notification, the DNO turnaround, or any small consumer-unit works. If a quote looks unusually low, check the installer will still register the install for you and that the warranty is not voided by an unregistered fit. Does this change the wait-or-buy maths?
Not much. EcoFlow has not committed to a fixed ship date here, so check the EcoFlow UK store for the current dispatch estimate. What it does change is the low end of the UK market: buyers who previously would have skipped batteries entirely because a 10 kWh install felt too big or too expensive now have a lower-cost route in.
The deadline that has not moved is 31 March 2027, when the 0% VAT rate on installed home batteries expires. Under HMRC's VAT Notice 708/6, installed batteries revert to the reduced 5% rate after 31 March 2027, while supply-only kit is standard-rated (20%) whenever you buy it. A properly sized battery installed before 31 March 2027 saves the household up to about £38 to £44 a month on Octopus Go in the best case (see how we worked it out), on top of the VAT saving.
The wider read
The Stream 5000 and the Octopus Nook range arriving in 2027 both point to the same shift: consumer-electronics brands moving into UK residential storage at price points that undercut the traditional installer-only channel. That is genuinely good news for buyers, provided the small print gets read: a low shelf price still needs a compliant install, and 5 kWh is not the same product as 11.5 kWh even if the £/kWh looks similar.
For a UK household actively shopping this autumn, the practical order of operations is unchanged. Size the battery to the load you can actually shift, not to the headline capacity you can afford. Get an installer to quote against your load profile, your tariff, and your DNO. Confirm the full fitted price including the G98 notification, and check the warranty is underwritten by someone you can actually reach in five years. Whether the answer is a 5 kWh EcoFlow STREAM, a larger battery, or waiting for Nook then falls out of the numbers.
