Search "how much does a home battery cost" and you will see a wide spread of numbers. Some adverts show hardware-only prices. Others quote 10 or 15 kWh wall kits. A few still talk about plug-in products that are not a legal whole-home solution. The honest range for a compliant, fully installed system looks like this.

What is included in a proper quote
A good installed price should cover more than the box on the wall.
- Hardware: Battery, integrated or matched inverter, management system, isolation and protection.
- Survey: Consumer unit space, meter type, legal location under current wiring and fire rules, and a sense-check of your usage.
- DNO process: G98 notification for a small all-in-one under the 3.68 kW line, or G99 if the inverter is larger.
- Labour: Hardwiring to the consumer unit, not a 13A socket. Commissioning and handover.
- VAT: 0% on qualifying installed systems until 31 March 2027 in England, Scotland and Wales.
Hardware-only adverts skip most of that. You then need to find an electrician who will take on the G98 or G99 work and stand behind the install. That is where "cheap" often stops being cheap. Why some quotes look much higher
Three common reasons:
- Capacity. A 10 or 15 kWh system stores more energy and usually costs more. If your evening and daytime base load is well under 5 kWh, extra capacity sits unused. Unused capacity does not earn.
- Separate inverter and labour. Modular systems that need a hybrid inverter, extra isolation and longer cable runs add cost. All-in-one units keep the job simpler.
- G99 instead of G98. Once the inverter sits above the 16A / 3.68 kW notification limit, the DNO process becomes an application rather than a notification. None of those are automatically wrong. They are different products for different jobs. A household with high daytime use, an EV on a different tariff, or a desire for longer backup may sensibly choose a larger system from another installer. For the typical small or medium home that wants to shift evening base load on a cheap overnight tariff, 5 kWh is usually the right first step rather than a compromise.
The 0% VAT window still matters
Installed home batteries currently qualify for 0% VAT in England, Scotland and Wales. The relief has been extended to 31 March 2027. After that the rate is expected to rise. On a £2,499 install the difference between 0% and 20% is nearly £500. On a larger system it is more.

Practical point. If you are close to deciding, the VAT deadline is a real calendar date, not marketing. Acting while the 0% rate still applies is one of the clearer ways to protect the economics.

Payback is not a guarantee. It is a planning figure. If you later move to a tariff with a narrower spread, or if your daytime load is already low, the annual saving falls and the years stretch. Cost without solar versus cost with solar
You do not need solar panels for a home battery to make financial sense. The core use case is tariff arbitrage: charge overnight when the rate is low, discharge against daytime and evening use when the rate is high. Solar can improve the picture if you export surplus and have a decent export rate, or if you simply prefer to store your own generation. It also adds cost and complexity. For many households the first, cleaner decision is a right-sized battery on a good overnight tariff. Solar can come later if the roof and the numbers still support it.
Finance and spreading the cost
Some households prefer to spread the outlay. Options include green home loans, certain council or local schemes, and provider finance where available. Interest-free periods change the effective payback maths, but they do not change the underlying annual saving.
