About London

London has the lowest rate of rooftop solar installation relative to its population, constrained by the high proportion of flats and conservation areas. Battery storage in London is primarily valuable for tariff arbitrage, with smaller dwelling sizes meaning a 5 kWh battery can cover a larger share of daily usage.

According to MCS data, at least 3,147 certified home battery installations have been completed in the London region since September 2023 – part of a nationwide surge in domestic battery uptake.

Your savings with a 5 kWh battery

The battery charges overnight at 9.5p and powers your home during the day, avoiding the 34.481p daytime rate. The saving is the difference between what the stored energy would have cost at the day rate and what it cost to charge overnight, allowing for charging losses.

The calculation (Octopus Go rates for London, checked 10 October 2026)
To deliver 5 kWh at the day rate, buy 5 ÷ 0.9 = 5.5556 kWh at the night rate (assumed 90% round-trip efficiency)
5 kWh × 34.481p − (5 ÷ 0.9) kWh × 9.5p = 172.405p − 52.7778p = 119.6272p saved per day
119.6272p × 365 days = £436.64/year, best case
Best-case payback: £2,499 ÷ £436.64 = about 5.7 years

Rates from the Octopus Energy API (product GO-FIX-12M-26-09-29, Octopus Go 12M Fixed, region C, direct debit, checked 10 October 2026). The 90% round-trip efficiency is our assumption, because EcoFlow does not publish one for the STREAM. This is a best case: one full cycle every day, with all of it used at the day rate. Real savings will be lower. Best-case payback on £2,499 fully installed is about 5.7 years. See how we worked it out.
