What the UK price actually covers
When people search for home battery storage UK cost they often see a wide spread of numbers. Some quotes are hardware only. Some include scaffolding, DNO fees or a survey. Some assume you already have a suitable location and a free consumer-unit slot.
A realistic fully installed price covers:
- The battery and integrated inverter (or separate inverter on larger systems)
- Survey and design
- Electrician labour to hardwire to the consumer unit
- G98 notification or G99 application with your Distribution Network Operator
- Isolation, earthing and protection under BS 7671
- VAT at the rate that applies on the day of install

These are ballpark figures for compliant, electrician-wired systems in Great Britain. They are estimates, not quotes. Regional labour, DNO charges and site complexity move the number.

What drives the cost up or down
Battery and inverter size. More usable kilowatt-hours and a higher inverter rating cost more hardware and often push you from a simple G98 notification into a longer G99 application.
Location and access. A garage or suitable external wall is usually straightforward. A tight utility cupboard, long cable runs or the need for a new consumer unit adds labour.
DNO process. Sub-3.68 kW (16 A) systems often use G98. Larger systems need G99. Some DNOs charge for assessment. Details sit on our G98 vs G99 and G99 application pages.
VAT. Installed home batteries in England, Scotland and Wales currently attract 0% VAT until 31 March 2027 if the rules are met. That is a material saving on the total. After the deadline the rate is expected to rise. See VAT on home batteries.
Tariff readiness. The hardware cost is fixed. The annual saving depends on whether you can use a cheap overnight tariff. A working smart meter and a tariff such as Octopus Go make the payback shorter. A dual-rate Economy 7 meter still works, but the spread is usually narrower.
Savings and payback: the honest band
Habo publishes a consistent savings range for the 5 kWh system: about £300 to £360 a year on a cheap overnight tariff (for example Octopus Go), one full cycle a day. That assumes you actually use the shifted kilowatt-hours and that round-trip losses are typical.

Rule of thumb. The cost case is strongest when you can charge cheap and discharge expensive every day. A battery without solar still does that on a time-of-use tariff. Solar can improve the numbers further, but it is not required for the investment to make sense.
Why a plug-in pack is not a cheaper legal alternative
Some adverts show lower prices for batteries that plug into a 13 A socket. Those products are not a compliant whole-home battery under UK rules when used to feed the house.
A system that supplies the home must be connected on the consumer-unit side, with the correct isolation, protection and DNO process (G98 or G99) and under BS 7671 / PAS 63100 location rules. Habo's 5 kWh unit is that kind of system: inverter in the box, hardwired by an electrician.

- Check your daily and evening kWh on a smart meter or supplier app.
- Decide whether a 5 kWh pack covers the peak you care about, or whether you need a larger system from another installer.
- Confirm you have (or can get) a suitable location and consumer-unit space.
- Check VAT and the 31 March 2027 deadline if you are in England, Scotland or Wales.
