Home Battery Payback Period

Payback period is installed price divided by yearly saving. For Habo's 5 kWh EcoFlow STREAM at £2,499 on current Octopus Go (which needs an EV charged at home), best-case payback is about 4.7 to 5.5 years.

Payback period for a home battery is how many years of bill saving it takes to cover the installed price. In the simple form it is installed price divided by yearly saving. It ignores inflation, tariff changes and the value of backup, so treat it as a planning figure, not a guarantee.

What it means for a home battery

Habo's worked example uses a 5 kWh EcoFlow STREAM at £2,499 fully installed on Octopus Go 12M Fixed GO-FIX-12M-26-10-14. Octopus Go needs an EV charged at home (Go terms clause 2.1.3). Re-checked on 28 October 2026 via the Octopus API, the product is still available (available_to is empty), the night rate is 9.4p, and the day rate runs from 35.293p (East Midlands) to 39.3081p (Merseyside and North Wales). With one full cycle a day, all used at the day rate, and an assumed 90% round-trip efficiency, the best-case yearly saving is about £453 to £527 (£453.49 to £526.76 before rounding). That is a best-case payback of about 4.7 to 5.5 years (£2,499 / £526.76 = 4.7; £2,499 / £453.49 = 5.5). See the homepage maths and how much a home battery can save.

Real payback is longer if you shift fewer kWh than a full pack each day, if you stay on a flat-rate tariff, or if the quote is larger than £2,499. Pair payback with warranty years and cycle life so the pack is still covered after it has paid for itself. The Energy Saving Trust also frames "is it worth it" around your tariff, usage and system cost rather than a single universal year count.

No. It is an illustration. Real savings fall if you do not use a full cycle every day, if rates change, or if round-trip losses differ from the assumption.

Use Habo's savings calculator with your day and night rates, then compare the result with the warranty length on the quote.
